Perennial Ryegrass

Description

Perennial Ryegrass is an introduced, perennial bunch grass that is used for forage, soil stabilization, and as a turf grass.  Tetraploid (TP) varieties make excellent forage and diploid are best for turf and conservation plantings.  (The terms diploid and tetraploid refer to the number of chromosomes in each cell, which affect the plant characteristics and therefore their suitability for particular uses.)  Both types establish quickly, but are short lived in the intermountain west.  Perennial Ryegrass is adapted to a wide range of soil types, but does best on medium to moderately fine textured soils with a neutral pH, high fertility, and adequate water.
