Red Medium Clover

Red Medium Clover is an introduced biennial or short-lived perennial that grows as one of two types: medium (double-cut) or mammoth (single-cut).  Red clover is most frequently used for hay, pasture and soil improvement.  It is a quick growing crop, easily established, and produces high quality forage.  It is winter hardy in most of the US (Zone 4 and higher). Tolerance of shade allows red clover to be used effectively as a cover crop under silage corn.  Red clover is capable of producing 70-150 lbs of nitrogen per acre and anywhere from 2,000 – 5,000 tons of dry matter.  It is an excellent graze however there is a bloat potential for grazing ruminants (cattle and sheep) and care must be taken.  Red Medium Clover does not get quite as tall as Mammoth Red Clover (18″ vs. 26″) but it has much more rapid regrowth allowing two cuttings per year.  Plant at 8-10 lbs/acre drilled and 10-12 lbs/acre broadcast.
