Weeping Lovegrass

Weeping Lovegrass is a warm-season bunch grass that was introduced from East Africa.  In climates with cold winters it acts as an annual but performs as a short-lived perennial in milder climates, where annual mean temperature is above 45 degrees.  Its 12-inch-long leaves droop, which inspired the name “weeping.”

This grass is a good temporary cover for erosion control since it grows rapidly and has an extensive fibrous root system.  In particular it is useful in surface mine reclamation because it can thrive in acidic, low-fertility soils.  Weeping Lovegrass is also used as a nurse crop when seeding other warm season grasses such as switchgrass.
