Alpine Bluegrass

Alpine Bluegrass is a cool season, high altitude bunch grass.  It is native to our western mountain alpine and sub-alpine zones that are cooler and higher in elevation.  It can be found in open and disturbed areas including meadows and grassy slopes and can tolerate shade.  It can tolerate slightly acidic soils. It is a relatively short, dense, bunch grass that can form a vegetative mat on the ground surface.  It grows from 8 – 20″ tall.  Alpine Bluegrass is very cold tolerant.  Alpine Bluegrass is typically used for reclamation and restoration projects and on road construction, ski slopes, and where “all native” plants are desired. Wildlife find the grass very palatable; however, it does not produce much tonnage.  Alpine Bluegrass typically takes 1 – 3 weeks to germinate when conditions are right.
