Thickspike Wheatgrass

Thickspike Wheatgrass is a native, cool-season, sod-forming, perennial grass that can be used for pasture, reclamation, and as a drought tolerant turf.  It is palatable to both livestock and wildlife, and established stands can withstand heavy grazing.  Although not noted for exceptional forage production, Thickspike Wheatgrass can be a top producer on drier sites.    Drought tolerance, good seedling vigor, and a dense root system make Thickspike ideal for reclamation and erosion control purposes at elevations ranging from sea level to 10,000 feet.  Thickspike Wheatgrass is long-lived and highly rhizomatous, and tolerates cold, fire, a pH of 6.0 to 9.5, and spring flooding.  It is compatible in mixes with other native grasses but, although it is one of the fastest establishing native grasses, it does not compete well with aggressive introduced species.
